Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation:
Bridging the dialectic of failure and hope. They "want it badly enough".
No other philanthropist has dedicated more of his personal resources to unraveling the knotty problem of transforming teaching in order to ensure a larger population of successful lifetime learners.
As Mr. Gates challenged all scientists in his "Innovating to Zero" Ted Talks, to be one of the human "miracles" to avoid planetary catastrophe" in the search for zero carbon emissions, he proposed the same challenge for education. From the beginning of time, humans have “participated in the creation of many miracles” such as the internet and discovery of vaccines. He noted he doesn’t have the answers or miracles, but he can, and does fund innovative approaches to inspire solutions to the impossible, from discovering a miracle to zero carbon emissions to equal access and quality education for all.
He is looking for individual miracles, to promote change. But along the way, he recognizes the power of failure in terms of energizing success. In these two article The Gates Foundation stands firm in its commitment to improving teaching and learning, despite setbacks.
